How to Keep Pet Stains Out of Your Carpet
By Todd Kinsey · 3 min read
Pet accidents happen. Whether they turn into a permanent stain mostly comes down to two things: how fast you clean them up, and what carpet and pad you have.
Clean it fast — and blot, don't scrub
Blot up as much as you can with paper towels, pressing down firmly. Scrubbing pushes the mess deeper and can fuzz the carpet fibers. Then use an enzyme cleaner made for pet messes, which breaks down the odor instead of covering it up.
Choose a stain-resistant carpet
Today's stain-resistant nylon and high-performance PET carpets are made to release spills much more easily than older carpet. If you have pets, it's worth choosing one of these when it's time to replace.
Don't forget the pad
A moisture-barrier pad keeps accidents sitting on top where you can clean them, instead of soaking into the pad underneath. That's what prevents the lingering smell many pet owners fight with.
