Carpet vs. Luxury Vinyl for Homes With Dogs
By Todd Kinsey · 4 min read
This is one of the most common questions I get when I'm standing in someone's living room with a stack of samples — and usually there's a dog sniffing the samples while we talk. Here's my honest take.
Luxury vinyl: the easy-cleanup choice
Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) is waterproof, so accidents wipe right up and don't soak into a pad. A good wear layer holds up well to claws, and it doesn't trap hair or odors.
The trade-offs: it's harder and louder under paws than carpet, and it can be slippery for older dogs. A few area rugs in the spots where your dog likes to run usually solves that.
Carpet: comfort, if you pick the right one
If you want soft floors, carpet can absolutely work with pets — but the fiber matters. Stain-resistant nylon or high-performance PET carpets clean up far better than older styles.
Pair it with a moisture-barrier pad. That keeps accidents from soaking down into the pad, which is where odors usually come from.
What a lot of my customers end up doing
Plenty of families split it: luxury vinyl in the kitchen, entry, and main living areas where the dog spends the most time, and pet-friendly carpet in the bedrooms. You get easy cleanup where it counts and comfort where you want it.
