Does Carpet Work in a Colorado Basement?

By Todd Kinsey · 3 min read

A lot of Southern Colorado homes have basements that become the family room, guest room, or kids' hangout. Carpet makes them warm and cozy, but basements come with one big concern: moisture.

Start with the pad

An upgraded moisture-barrier pad is the single best thing you can do for basement carpet. It keeps any dampness from the concrete — or a spilled drink — from soaking into the pad.

Pick a fiber that bounces back

Stain-resistant nylon or high-performance PET carpets are good choices. They handle the heavy traffic basements tend to get from kids, pets, and game nights.

When luxury vinyl is better

If your basement has had water problems, or it's mostly a laundry or storage area, waterproof luxury vinyl is usually the safer choice. Some people do luxury vinyl in the main area and carpet in a basement bedroom. I'm happy to look at your space and give you an honest recommendation.
